Shirley Caesar, Fred Hammond & Others Salute Our Mothers
MannaScript

On Mother's Day, family and friends treated the special women in their lives to an all-
star musical tribute. Pastor
Shirley Caesar, Ambassador Dr. Bobby Jones, Fred
Hammond
and Valencia Lacy were among hundreds who came out to salute our
mothers in Miami.
MS was right there to join the night of praise and thanks for moms.

The James L. Knight Center roared with celebration and tears as concert-goers
cherished the time they shared with loved ones. Among opening acts was Valencia
Lacy of
Shekinah Glory Ministries. The songstress ushered in a spirit of worship
with her hit praise ballad “Yes.”

Fred Hammond rocked the crowd with a medley of his familiar praise and worship
tunes, including an “old school mix” for the mothers. But after a touching moment of
ministering to those who had been enduring repeated personal storms, Fred
shocked the audience with an intercessory prayer in the middle of his show. He
asked the Lord to strengthen, protect and comfort us, and he was quick to include
himself in the petition.

After Fred’s piece,
MS found a graceful Pastor Shirley Caesar backstage, poised
and prepped — a contrast to her foot-stomping stage charisma. Ever the mother
figure, Pastor Shirley directed photographers on how to get the best shot of us.
Needless to say, the Grammy-winning, reigning Queen of Gospel known for her
“mama songs,” did not disappoint with her energetic performance.

Event promoter
Ricky Derae, who allowed us all access, gave us his take on the
strong connection between Mother’s Day and Gospel music. “On Mother’s day,
people always go back and think about when they were growing up, listening to
Gospel music with their mothers. That kind of stuff doesn’t leave you.”

Derae’s goal was to unify two otherwise separate crowds in booking Pastor Shirley
and Fred. “For over 20 years, Pastor Caesar and I have had this bond for Mother’s
Day. For the last couple of years, I mixed it to where we have two different crowds
coming together, like last year we had Shirley and
CeCe Winans. Doing Gospel
concerts, you have to break the barriers and stop just going with one style.”

Seems like Dr. Bobby had the same concept in mind. The Gospel music pioneer
chatted with
MS about his upcoming Gospel Music Industry Retreat later this month
in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

“We all come together, the artists from every dimension of Gospel music. All of us
will relay each of our special areas to each other, so all of us will know what’s going
on, who’s recording, what publications are being printed," he said. "We also invited a
lot of mainstream people, who we are very proud to have. We like to bring them into
our fold. A lot of them are Christians, but they don’t get an opportunity to work within
this organization, so our organization opens up to them.”

MS will keep you posted on the event. For more information, visit
